The whole idea of sustainability is to protect our natural environment, human and ecological health through innovation while keeping the balance not to compromise our way of life. In sustainable architecture, a common design goal for architects has been to specify materials that are highly durable and lasting throughout the ages. Here in Jonite, our experienced team of R&D experts are able to discuss these details to create custom products ideally suited for their uses.

Jonite Products
All of Jonite’s stone grates comprise at least 30% recycled materials, and our R&D team is constantly working to make our products and manufacturing processes more sustainable. In effect, this leads to a substantial reduction of carbon emission induced during manufacturing as compared to conventional products like steel gratings.

Our green practices are recognized – Green Label certified under the Singapore Environment Council. The Building and Construction Authority(BCA) of Singapore Green Mark acknowledges the use of Green Label certified products and awards Green Mark points for their usage. Jonite is also the only grates manufacturer to be recognized as a Leader with four ticks under the SGBC (Singapore Green Building Council) Architectural Drain Covers category. Products are assessed on their environmental properties and performance through a comprehensive list of assessment criteria covering the five key areas of Energy Efficiency, Water Efficiency, Resource Efficiency, Health & Environmental Protection, and Other Green Features. This accreditation enables architects to accrue more BCA Green Mark points if they choose to use our reinforced stone trench grates.
Through the LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) green building certification program, the U.S. Green Building Council is transforming the built environment. As a member of the USGBC and with the usage of recycled content, Jonite satisfies MR Credit 4: Recycled Content under LEED®. The LEED® Green Building Rating System is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high-performance green buildings in the United States.
Practising Sustainability
Jonite aims to actively participate in keeping our carbon footprint minimal by reducing the amount of energy our facilities utilize. Together we work with the supply chain, upstream and downstream, to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions associated with business operations.
When it comes to water management, we are committed to setting sustainable water reduction targets for our operations and have installed water-saving devices for employee washing and toilet facilities. These targets also apply to our operations by using our environmental management system.
All waste disposal options have an impact on the environment, and the only way to avoid these harsh consequences is to omit to create waste in the first place. Therefore, Jonite is committed to reducing waste by judicious purchasing and practicing strict quality control in our products.
Take Back Programme
Many old metal gratings are disposed of away every year when they are not scrapped or recycled.
Jonite offers clients a Take Back Programme, which allows clients to return their old Jonite gratings to be sent back for recycling. Old Jonite gratings that have reached their usable life cycle can be taken back to our factories to be safely recycled into functional materials.
Jonite is constantly finding new ways to increase the durability as well as the manufacturing efficiency of our products by innovating new processes to reverse engineer our products to extract out more of the reusable materials. Not only will our stone products last longer, but also be able to be more material-efficient when going through our recycling process.
We are constantly encouraging and educating our clients about our Take Back Programme to increase the volume of gratings being retrieved.

Final Thoughts
While expense is always one of the key factors for civic building planners, it is important to consider that spending more up-front on sustainable strategies comes with its own set of benefits in the long run. Industries can expect to accumulate large savings over time, as well as contribute to a regenerative future by minimizing the toll of the manufacturing process towards the environment.
