Using Green Architectural Materials: A Good Sign!

As human beings finally focus their attention on the state of the environment and own up to their own contribution to the destruction of the planet’s natural resources, people have come to realize that they have a great responsibility of conserving the gifts of the earth to ensure that succeeding generations of the human race will survive.

In the last three decades, human beings acted to preserve the environment after so many years of ravaging it. The operative world was sustainability, and it applied to everything from personal lifestyles to how corporations run their business operations. Certainly, the concept of sustainability also influenced the realms of architecture and construction. Occurring out of necessity, going green when it comes to selecting architectural materials has now become a growing and widely accepted trend.

Defining Green Architectural Materials

Green architectural materials are designed to have no adverse effects to the environment and on human health. These building materials are energy efficient, produce the least amount of carbon emission in their manufacture and procurement, and have a high rate of reusability. As much as possible, these materials should be sourced locally to minimize carbon emissions associated with vehicles delivering the materials to the construction site.

Green Architectural Materials: What Are They Made Of?

Most green architectural materials are usually recycled, highly renewable and recyclable products. These materials include those taken from resources such as plants (e.g., bamboo and straw); materials taken from the ground (e.g., clay, adobe, recycled stone); and industrial goods (e.g., foundry sand and demolition debris).

Most builders worry that green construction materials are not as durable or as dependable as the usual materials used in constructing buildings. That worry is unfounded, considering that a large number of companies specializing in the manufacture of green architectural materials allocate a large amount of resources for researching and developing materials that have the same durability and dependability of construction materials such as steel, iron, stone, and concrete. Furthermore, there are some sustainable materials that have far better durability and dependability that their environmentally damaging counterparts.
